Conţinut:

World Cervical Cancer Prevention Week is an opportunity to remind that cervical cancer is one of the few oncological diseases that, in many cases, can be prevented through vaccination and regular screening. Despite the availability of early detection methods for precancerous changes, the number of women affected by this disease continues to rise worldwide.

Cervical cancer is an oncological disease of the female reproductive system associated with the malignant transformation of cervical epithelial cells. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 660,000 new cases of cervical cancer and about 350,000 deaths were recorded worldwide in 2022. [1]
Early stages of the disease are usually asymptomatic, and the appearance of clinical symptoms may indicate disease progression and the spread of pathological changes.

The basis of secondary prevention consists of regular gynecological check-ups and laboratory screening. The key diagnostic methods are the HPV test (human papillomavirus) and the Pap test (cytological examination). These tests allow assessment of individual risk and detection of early cellular changes before the onset of clinical symptoms.

The HPV test detects the presence of oncogenic virus types and helps assess the risk of developing precancerous lesions.
The Pap test makes it possible to identify cellular atypia and precancerous conditions at a stage when treatment is generally the least invasive and most effective. Combined interpretation of HPV test and Pap test results increases the accuracy of early diagnosis and helps timely determine the need for additional investigations.
