Computerized dermatoscopy is a modern method for examining skin lesions (nevi, pigmented spots, or other skin growths) using a digital device and analysis software to visualize the skin structure under optical magnification. This allows detailed assessment of lesion shapes, colors, texture, and vascular patterns.
Role
- Early detection of melanocytic and non-melanocytic changes.
- Identification of signs of malignancy or malignant transformation.
- Monitoring lesion evolution over time.
- Guiding decisions for excision or clinical follow-up.
Advantages
- Non-invasive and painless investigation.
- Precise and objective evaluation of skin lesions.
- Photographic documentation and digital archiving for longitudinal follow-up.
- Reduces the risk of unnecessary excision of benign lesions.
Indications
- Patients with multiple nevi or a history of melanoma.
- New or rapidly changing skin lesions (color, shape, size).
- Evaluation of suspicious pigmented skin lesions.
- Monitoring lesions after dermatological treatments or surgical interventions.
Contraindications
- Actively infected or inflamed lesions (examination should be postponed until healed).
- Patients with severe intolerance to device contact (rare).
Results
- The result is a detailed report including dermatoscopic images, lesion characteristics, and dermatologist interpretation.
- Allows comparison with future examinations to detect changes over time.
Procedure
- Cleaning the area to be examined.
- Applying contact gel or liquid if needed.
- Scanning each lesion with the computerized dermatoscope.
- Digital analysis of images and comparison with medical databases.
- Preparation of a comprehensive evaluation report for the patient and referring physician.
Interpretation of results:
Positive result: The lesion shows suspicious signs of malignancy or changes requiring further investigation or surgical excision.
Negative result: The lesion appears benign with no signs of malignancy; periodic monitoring is recommended.
Pregătirea:
- No special preparation is required.
- Avoid applying creams or makeup on the area before examination.
- Inform the physician about any history of melanoma, dermatological treatments, or surgical interventions on the skin.
